A 15-year-old in a black-and-red clown costume, complete with mask and glasses, walked through a residential neighborhood in St. Louis, Illinois on Monday night, knocking on doors while carrying a knife. One doorbell camera captured him telling a homeowner, "I have a gift for you."
John Wesley Allen Sr., 78, was found dead in the roadway shortly after.
St. Louis police arrived at the scene shortly after 10 p.m. Monday to find Allen's body lying in the street. The St. Clair County Coroner's Office confirmed the cause of death as multiple stab wounds. The 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody that same night.
Neighbors told police they had seen the costumed teenager walking door-to-door before the killing. Multiple residents reported he was visibly carrying a knife. Video of the suspect in his clown getup circulated on social media within hours, showing the full costume and the casual, almost theatrical way he moved through the neighborhood. https://rumble.com/v7dtrqg-teen-in-creepy-clown-costume-goes-door-to-door-before-fatally-stabbing-elde.html?e9s=src_v1_s%2Csrc_v1_s_o&sci=b949fe94-94b5-44b2-8d24-0fefcff7de9b
The St. Louis Police Department and Illinois State Police are conducting a joint investigation. No formal charges have been announced, and authorities have released limited information about the suspect due to his juvenile status. A motive has not been disclosed.
That last detail is the one worth sitting with. A teenager put on a clown costume. Grabbed a knife. Walked up to strangers' doors in the dark. Told at least one of them he had a "gift." And a 78-year-old man ended up stabbed to death in the middle of the road.
Whatever the investigation turns up about motive, the mechanics of what happened are already clear. This wasn't impulsive. The costume was planned. The door-to-door approach was deliberate.
John Wesley Allen Sr. was 78 years old. He lived in that neighborhood. Whatever he was doing Monday night — walking home, stepping outside, checking on a noise — he crossed paths with a teenager who had already decided what the evening was going to look like.
The doorbell camera footage exists. The neighbors saw the knife. The costume was unmistakable. None of it was enough to save him.
