Senate Republicans Skip Town on $72 Billion ICE Bill — Thune Admits the Quiet Part Out Loud

The Senate GOP just packed their bags and headed home for vacation while a $72 billion reconciliation package to fund ICE and Border Patrol sits collecting dust on the shelf. And Senate Majority Leader John Thune basically admitted the delay is political payback aimed at President Trump.

Nothing says "party unity" like sabotaging your own president's border enforcement agenda and then jetting off to the beach.

Thune was asked about the delay on Thursday and delivered what might be the most honest thing he's said all year — which is exactly why it's so infuriating. "It's hard to divorce anything that happens here from what's happening in political atmosphere around us," Thune said. "You can't disconnect those things."

Translation for normal Americans: we're stalling because we're mad at Trump, and we don't care if the border stays open while we pout about it.

The Gateway Pundit's Cristina Laila reported on the Senate's decision to recess until June without voting on the reconciliation bill — a package that includes critical funding for ICE, Border Patrol, and $1 billion for Secret Service security. You know, minor things like keeping the country safe and the president alive.

But the dysfunction doesn't stop with petty politics. The Obama-era Senate Parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, struck down three key provisions from the bill just last week. So not only is the Senate GOP dragging its feet — an unelected bureaucrat leftover from the Obama administration is actively gutting the legislation.

Meanwhile, the House already did its job. They passed DHS funding by voice vote. Done. Finished. Moved on. The Senate can't even be bothered to show up.

And let's talk about what's really going on beneath the surface. The stalling reportedly centers around a DOJ weaponization fund — because apparently some senators have a problem with holding the Department of Justice accountable for the garbage they pulled over the last few years. Shocking.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, never one to miss an opportunity to be unhelpful, weighed in with his own grievance: "So the nation's top law enforcement official is asking for a slush fund to pay people who assault cops? Utterly stupid, morally wrong — take your pick."

Look, McConnell's not wrong on that specific point. But coming from the guy who's made an art form of undermining the MAGA agenda from within, you'll forgive us for not standing up to applaud.

Let's remember what we're actually talking about here. A 75-day government shutdown already happened. The border is still a war zone. ICE agents are out there doing the job with one hand tied behind their back. And the Republican-controlled Senate just said, "Eh, we'll get to it after Memorial Day."

Thune said the quiet part out loud. This isn't about policy disagreements or parliamentary procedure. This is about a chunk of the Senate GOP establishment that still hasn't accepted that Trump is the leader of this party — and they'd rather let the border burn than give him a win. The base sees it. We always do.
