Dana Williamson, the woman who served as Governor Gavin Newsom's chief of staff from early 2023 through the end of 2024, just walked into a federal courtroom in Sacramento and pleaded guilty to three felonies. Lying to the FBI. Filing a false tax return. Conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud. So basically, the person running the day-to-day operations of America's most self-righteous state government was allegedly running a side hustle that would make a mob accountant blush.
But don't worry — Gavin feels bad about it. On a "personal basis," of course.
Here's what Newsom actually said when asked about his former right hand getting caught red-handed: "We've all got to be held to the letter of the law and accountable. But on a personal basis, you know, for her kids — it's tough." For her kids. Not for the taxpayers who got fleeced. Not for the donors whose campaign money got siphoned off. For the kids. That's the Newsom playbook — wrap yourself in empathy while the people around you are looting the silverware.
Williamson was originally hit with 23 counts as part of what federal prosecutors called the "Conduit Scheme" conspiracy. The scheme involved siphoning campaign funds to pad salaries — a creative approach to government service that apparently ran deep in California's political class.
She wasn't operating alone, either. Sean McCluskie, who served as chief of staff to Xavier Becerra — the same Becerra who's now the leading candidate to replace Newsom as governor — is also facing the music. McCluskie and a lobbyist named Greg Campbell are scheduled for sentencing on June 4. The investigation has been running since 2022, and what it uncovered was a cozy little network of "public servants" helping themselves to other people's money.
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant didn't mince words. "These conspirators, three of whom are former public officials, shockingly looted campaign funds for personal benefit." Shockingly. Even the feds were surprised, and these guys investigate corruption for a living.
Under the plea deal, Williamson faces roughly three years in prison, though she'll likely serve about 18 months. She also has to pay more than $500,000 in restitution. So she'll do a year and a half and write a check. Meanwhile, Newsom will keep running around pretending he's America's next great leader while his inner circle pleads guilty to federal crimes one by one.
As reported by Hot Air, this guilty plea adds to the growing cloud of corruption surrounding Newsom's political operation. And let's be honest — it's less a cloud at this point and more a permanent weather system.
The guy who lectured us about equity and accountability couldn't keep his own chief of staff from committing federal crimes. The guy who shut down businesses during COVID while eating at the French Laundry had a top aide who was apparently treating campaign funds like a personal expense account. The guy who wants to be president can't even run a clean governor's office.
But sure, Gavin. Tell us more about how tough it is — for her kids.
