Gun Control Activist Spray-Paints 9/11 Memorial, Films Himself Doing It, and Somehow Thinks He's the Hero

Jonathan Andrew Tijerina, a 31-year-old gun control activist, walked up to the North Tower reflecting pool at Ground Zero on the evening of October 26, uncapped a can of red spray paint, and wrote "Juststopkillingkids.com" across the bronze panels engraved with the names of nearly 3,000 people murdered on September 11, 2001.

Then he turned on the camera.

"My name is Jon Tijerina and I've just spray-painted 'just stop killing kids' on the 9/11 Memorial," he announced on video, which he promptly posted to his organization's Instagram account. The New York Post reported Tijerina recorded the entire stunt from start to finish.

The NYPD arrested Tijerina on charges of criminal mischief and making graffiti. Damage to the memorial was estimated at over $2,500. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum confirmed the red paint was successfully removed and no permanent damage was done to the panels — though "no permanent damage" is doing a lot of work in that sentence when we're talking about spray-painting over the names of the dead.

Tijerina's organization, operating under the website Juststopkillingkids.com, released a statement that read like a press kit for a cause no one asked about: "On October 26, 2026, Jon Tijerina was arrested for spraying red paint on Freedom Tower in NYC. He is demanding that Trump and Mamdani enforce common-sense, highly popular demands with respect to guns." The two demands: universal background checks and a national gun registry.

California has had both universal background checks and a gun registry for decades. California also led the nation in active shooter incidents in both 2021 and 2023. Tijerina's policy wish list already exists in America's most populated state. The results are in. They're not good.

The "Mamdani" in that statement is Zohran Mamdani, the current mayor of New York City, whose name Tijerina invoked as though Mamdani is some reluctant ally who just needs a push. This is the same Zohran Mamdani who was filmed during the 25th anniversary ceremony of the September 11 attacks laughing with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the names of the victims were being read aloud. The memorial Tijerina defaced honors the same dead whose names Mamdani couldn't be bothered to listen to in silence.

Blaze News noted that Tijerina's prior activism included a week-long hunger strike for affordable housing. So we have a pattern: grand gestures aimed at problems the gesture does nothing to solve, executed in ways that alienate anyone who might have been sympathetic. Spray-painting a 9/11 memorial doesn't advance gun legislation. It doesn't save a single child. It desecrates a gravesite to drive traffic to a website.

Unfortunately this isn't the only statue vandalized this week. An illegal alien from Mexico took a sledgehammer to the Iwo Jima memorial in Quantico, Virginia earlier this week, and is now facing federal charges with an ICE detainer lodged against him. Two memorials. Two acts of destruction aimed at monuments honoring Americans who died serving or simply existing in this country. The vandals had different causes. The contempt was identical.

Tijerina wanted a conversation about guns. He started it by defacing the names of people killed by Islamic terrorists who wanted to get revenge on the West.

Nearly 3,000 names are on those bronze panels. The paint came off. The video is still up.
